Use mostly wood furniture in the living room ‐ a traditional‐style secretary, sideboard, lowboy, bookcase and sofa table. Oak, pine, walnut and mahogany are all popular choices.
Edit the space. Even after you have carefully layered furnishings into the room, stand again and decide whether there's anything the area can do without. If you like an item but it generally doesn’t fit into the space, utilize it in another room or store it for use later.
Use mirrors. Mirrors open up a space and indicate light, making a room seem bigger. Place a big mirror over the sofa, or opposite a window to fully capture the light. You can also put several small mirrors along to create the sense of 1 large mirror.
